Random Crap 2009!

From OUAGADOUGOU, BURKINA FASO
Just kidding.

From TORONTO,
January 7th, 2010

Friends, I am about to go downstairs and murder the dog that won't stop barking, as well as any neighbours that try getting in my way. This could result in jail time, and while I imagine I am legally permitted to blog from jail, I fear that my noisy laptop would disturb the other inmates and put my life in danger. There's also the possibility that, due to its size and heft and strange appearance, the guards would consider it a dangerous weapon and take it away fom me along with my belt and many knives.

I may manage to escape the authorities and flee to High Park on my new snowshoes (!) and wearing the corpse of the offending dog as a hat. There I'll live among the raccoons and Japanese tourists all winter, emerging in the spring unrecognizable with my long beard and therefore safe. But clearly, as my Vaio's battery won't even last me to the streetcar stop and back, I won't be blogging from the woods either.

Either way, it may be a while, so I've a few things to get off my chest first.

#1: I have snowshoes! Here they are!

OOOH. AHH. OHHH.

I hate that stupid little laugh that Joni Mitchell does at the end of Big Yellow Taxi. It's enough to make me hate the entire song. And I just don't understand it. What's so funny about paving paradise to put up a parking lot? Nothing! And that's why the laugh is so fake.

I read an audition posting the other day in which the theatre stated it was looking for performers who are "able to move". This is not the first time I've seen this. They don't say that you need to be able to dance, or even be particularly graceful, though that's what they mean. Just able to move. I'd love to go into the audition, introduce myself, and for my audition piece, just sit in a chair, completely still, and occasionally shoot an arm or leg in the air. Or painstakingly raise an eyebrow or a single pinky with a pained groan. Better yet, I could pose as a quadraplegic and have someone wheel me to the audition, where we loudly protest the discrimination being demonstrated against me, an actor who isn't able to move.

Do animals get insomnia?

Has anyone died because they couldn't find their phone in their apartment to call 911?

I'm surprised that apples don't have a PR problem. Isn't it the fault of them and that snakey little devil that we all don't live in Eden? Don't they represent our fall from grace with GOD? And yet Boy Scouts sell them, and they have this squeaky-clean image, "American as apple pie" and all that. You'd think evangelical Christians would be condemning apples as Satan's fruit and stoning those who grow or eat them. Who represents apples? I want their agent.

Speaking of apples and Boy Scouts...

I can no longer bear to hear my boyfriend speak of his scouting years as a kid. It makes me angry. It makes me jealous. It makes me want to jab him with sharp, pointy objects. And not in a sexy way.

I was a Brownie. It sucked. I may have told you this before, but I was the worst Brownie in history. I earned precisely two badges; one for knowing how to read, and one for learning the alphabet in sign language, which was the only other choice that interested me. It seemed they were always trying to get us to sew and bake and darn socks and make useless crafts. I tried for a sewing badge once, but it was just too complicated. My two sad badges were stuck on me with safety pins. Meetings took place, usually, in the horrible ugly gymnasium of some Scarborough school nearby.

Kimberly Moonlight and I only joined because we followed some older, cooler girls there one day and wanted to be like them. We lied about our age. (You had to be seven and we were six.) There were weird rituals involving dancing around a fire and chanting. As we were in a gym, the "fire" was an effect created by some creepy girls crinkling orange cellophane and waving it around. There was something called a toadstool. We were Pixies first, and then danced around chanting until one day we were "flown up" to the Brownie level. I think there may have been a stuffed owl involved. I know we had to call the adults things like Brown Owl and Tawny Owl, and that one of them would read us boring stories and things from the bible.

One day I got in deep trouble because, restless during storytime, I started showing all the other Brownies the gross cut on my tongue. My sister and I had been trying to breakdance on the kitchen floor one day (obviously), and I had bit down on my own tongue while attempting a headspin. It now looked kind of lumpy and scary and what could be better than that? All the sucky girls around me reacted appropriately, looking grossed out and shocked and mouthing "Ewww", until one Brownie whose nose was particularly brown, raised her hand and told on me.

They stripped me of my badges and clothes and made me sit on the plaster toadstool shivering and naked for the rest of the meeting, while they chanted insults in Cree and pelted me with pine cones and macaroni. At least that's how it felt.

When we got to be old enough, our mothers let Kim and me quit Brownies and join Guides, which was for older kids, where you got to wear blue uniforms, and where my mom said the girls "might be less sucky". They weren't! They were MORE SUCKY! Some of them were thirteen and still doing this shit by choice, when they should be out experimenting with crack cocaine and boys! Some of them were horrible tyrants. And the whole thing was infinitely boring, and still took place in a school, this time one further away.

Also, wearing your uniform to school on National Scouting Day was even more humiliating now that you weren't so young and cute and had an awkward haircut and might get boobs soon.

I hated selling Girl Guide cookies. I resented it. It was awful. It set the tone for any humiliating joe job I've had to do since. (It was, however, infinitely better than the time our grade school announced that our fundraising product that year would be family-sized jars of spices. They even had an infomercial-type salesman lead a pep talk in the gym, telling us how great an idea this was. I remember standing in a neighbours' doorway, offering up the one fact I, the ten year old not-yet Tourist knew about any spice in an effort to help the school effort: "Seasoning Salt is REEEEEAALY good on popcorn. I use it myself all the time.")

Anyhow, boyfriend Jason wasn't a BROWNIE, he was a Cub. Way cooler. He wasn't a Guide, he was a Scout. They didn't sell sugary fattening cookies, they sold delicious fresh healthy apples. He didn't go to meetings in an enormous, fluorescent-lit gym, he went on expeditions. They went hunting! They went winter camping, for fuck's sake! When I went to Brownie camp one summer, and later to Guide camp, we stayed in these pre-built wooden platform tents, so we weren't even sleeping on the ground, and didn't get to pitch anything. Our main duties seemed to be waddling back and forth filling buckets with water in case our tents caught on fire, and scrubbing the toilets. I shared quarters with a girl named Barbie, who was my fast friend, but later my mortal enemy (ending with us rolling on the ground, at blows, while on a nature walk), and with two whiney, fat, identical twins who cried all night and whimpered, "I miss mom." "Me too. I miss Mom." "I miss Dad." "Yeah, I miss Dad."

At this camp, Windy Owl and Farty Owl would give us time each day to write letters home, despite the fact that we were gone for less than a week and we'd get home before our letters did. I kept pointing out this fact to the twins, who nonetheless huddled together every afternoon, sniffling out, "Dear Mom, Dear Dad, come get us." They were twelve.

The only redemptive moment came each evening at dinner time, when I got to sit near Penny, an older, slutty girl who would share confusing and interesting facts about sex and periods. But she started to sicken me after a while.

Meanwhile, the fucking Boy Scouts were off killing wolves with bows and arrows or sometimes just skinning them alive, and building bridges across rapids while their handsome, rugged leaders shouted handsome, rugged words of encouragement and tossed them each a beer as a way of saying, "Job well done, son".

This is why one cannot speak to me of Boy Scouts.

I really love leaving my contact lens case on the window sill overnight in winter. In the morning when I put my lenses on my eyes, they are deliciously cool and kind of shocking. This is fun.
I need to get out more.

I just busted one of the straps on my new snowshoes. Here it is:

BOOOO. HOOOO.

Half of me thinks it ridiculous that "installation wizards" are called what they are. The other half thinks it's kind of wonderful. I don't encounter many wizards in everyday life.

No, Scotiabank. I am not "richer than I think." Unless you're planning to give me some cash, I know exactly how poor I am, you profit-posting sons of whores.

Jason is designing some shows in the Next Stage Festival. So far, I have been invited via facefuck and group email a dozen times by three or four people and some "groups", none of them the man himself. I was fully intending to go, but now I think I won't, to protest all the harrassment.

When Daniel Karasik was promoting his play The Crossing Guard (not to be confused with the 1995 film of the same name though, oddly enough, they did both star Jack Nicholson) he sent out facefuck invites three times a day for six years. I started waking up in the middle of the night with a start, drenched in sweat and yelling "Crossing Guard! Crossing Guard!" In the end I actually went. And I really enjoyed it. But I didn't like enjoying it.

Also I think Hugh Grant is underrated.

Unintentional Four Weddings and a Funeral segue in 5...4....3...2....

Have you seen this L'Oreal hair dye ad in which Andie MacDowell, spokesmodel, claims the product will even work on "those stubborn little wiry ones"? What the fuck? Why is Andie MacDowell taking an interest in my pubes? And why does she want me to colour them?? I just don't understand the televisor.

This is from an ad on ebay from a seller peddling the Dora the Explorer Talking Cash Register, a popular item for little capitalist golddigging sluts in training....er I mean, girls:

Dora the Explorer she is such a popular character. This is Dora's talking Cash Register. This is new in the box, never opened. Dora the Explorer is off on another adventure. This time, she is teaching children the value of money with her very own talking cash register. It comes to life with pretend shopping trips and bilingual phrases to send kids on their own shopping trip. They can use Dora dollars or even swipe their own Dora credit card. As a real working cash register, it has a credit card tablet for kids to sign their name, just like adults! And to help Dora with her shopping, they can scan bar codes on the price tags or in the adventure book. This toy provides hours of amusement and the children can even act like different customers using the dress-up accessories provided. Kids ages three through eight will have lots of fun as they shop with Dora.

Just look at this kid, proudly displaying her first credit card.

I guess that's not so bad. I probably had some kind of Fisher Price cash register when I was a kid. But check out.....Polly Pocket's Race To the Mall!

In case you think I made that one up, here's the terrifying TV ad:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/mpd/permalink/m3T8CFI8XBRD3B

Guess when I first saw these products advertised? Last Christmas, just before the financial crisis! Training our little girlchildren to rack up debt! I know, I know, spend five years acting at The Shaw Festival and you come out the other side a big fat socialist. Good thing I didn't work at The Stalin Festival (located in picturesque Espanola, Ontario, pop. 5 314).

The other night I had a dream in which I came up with the ultimate business plan. It goes like this: get hold of a bunch of crocodiles, tranquilize them and then wire their jaws shut so they can't bite. Toss them in a pool with a bunch of rich businessfolk and extreme sportsters who've paid a lot of money for the danger and excitement of swimming with predators. I'd just moved on to the idea of adding great white sharks to the mix when I woke up. I now realize that the sharks and crocodiles would likely be strong enough and determined enough to break anything holding their jaws shut, so I think I may not have come up with a brilliant unethical business plan but a brilliant horror movie plot. Could they use this in Saw IX? I hear they're running out of writers who will work on those things.

You know those junkmail items you get intermailed by lovely young ladies like Mandy! and Wendy! with subjects such as "bigtitttttssixtynein" or "wild girl ayyynal" (weird spelling in hopes of passing through the spam filters)? I got sent one titled "Brutal 3some fckuking at the gloomy bedroom".

Ladies and gentlemen....Mister Burt Reynolds!

And some bandages that look like bacon!

And that My Friends, for now, is all.

So much the lighter for sharing this all with you, ready for 2010, for murder, mayhem and life on the run,
The always Skeptical,

Tourist

WELCOME BACK. WE'VE BEEN EXPECTING YOU.

From TORONTO
August 8th, 2009

What happens when I get off one gig and have very little to do until the next? That's right, Faithful Reader: I masturbate. A lot. But also.....random weird thoughts that have been jiggling around in my very large brain get a chance to rise to the surface. I've been home from beautiful Gananoque for a month now, my head empty of the creative struggle, my couch dented with a large ass print, the contents of my liquor cabinet in a constant busy rotation......which means that you now get:

AIMLESS MUSINGS FROM THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF NORTON.
WhOOOOOOOO!!! (I just like to say that. Typing it is pretty good, too.)

I think I often make the mistake, when working out of town, of thinking that as soon as I get back things are going to be some kind of exciting nonstop party all day and night, with no effort on my part. Like I'm going to be lifted up and put on a float the second I arrive and led through screaming throngs of Torontonians on some kind of Back From Gananoque V-Day Parade. To be sure, there's more going on here than there was there......okay, there's a LOT more going on than there was there, and friends to see, and sex to be had.....but I also get to do wonderful things like sort receipts and organize my closet. Maybe I should do mushrooms and then sort receipts and clean my closet. Actually, that sounds terrifying.

Speaking of sorted receipts, I've now paid my 6000 dollar debt in back GST. Just 7000 bucks in back taxes to go + whatever horrors remain on my credit cards! Donations toward my worthy cause may be made to girlyoullbeawomansoon@paypal.com . And oh, I will be free!!!

My television blew up the very day that I arrived back in Toronto. While that's never much of a distraction for me - my timewasters are more often of the intertubing wormhole/show-spider-solitaire-who's-boss variety - I do like watching DVDs. Now that I have an inability to do that (except on my angry old laptop, which makes a constant sound like a family of four all blowdrying their hair, and so is, oh, slightly distracting) there's more time for staring at the wall and into my own head.

You will be interested to know that as I turned the TV on - hoping to settle in with West Side Story and a pizza or two - it made a terrifying, loud, PchOOOOOOoooooo sound (go ahead, try it) that scared the hell out of me. And a bright flash of light left me legally blind for the next ten minutes. It was exciting. Obviously an attempt at contact by the aliens who live in my TV set.

To even out the technology balance, I did get my stupid fridge replaced, so I now have a working freezer for the first time since I moved into this apartment. What's to complain about when I can sit here, chewing happily on ice cubes hour after hour and stuffing ice packs down my pants to make up for two lost years of coldness? I know, it's no West Side Story.

And now, A Glass Half Full Moment: I suppose this crappy, crappy summer means a little less melanoma for everyone. Thanks, Crappy Summer!

I fear I have a homicidal streak. I really enjoy murdering fruit flies. And every winter I derive great pleasure from seeing the mounting tally I keep on a pad on my fridge of all the mice I've electrocuted in my little zappy trap. I bought the trap on a Home Depot trip with my mom; on the way home in the car, I got all excited and said, "I can't wait to get home and start killing mice." She turned to me and said, "That might just be the strangest thing you've ever said."

I suppose the word "homicidal" only applies to killing humans, though, and I've never done that yet. I'm just flyicidal and mousicidal. (And centipedacidal - those things are fucking disgusting.) I envy my boyfriend for his flying bug killer. The spray I have kind of leaves the fruit flies writhing around on the counter, whispering "Kill me." His has "instant knockdown" - you spray them and they drop right out of the sky, which is super fun.

The mouse thing perplexes me, since I once had a pet mouse, and loved him like the son I'll never have. His name was Nick. I bought him at the Humane Society for four dollars, though his cage cost thirty. They make you buy one on the spot, which reassures them that you're not just taking the mouse home to feed to your pet snake, though I'm not sure why they care.

Nick lived in a cage in the kitchen of my bachelor apartment and each night I would hear him try to get his hamster wheel going and then give up. He didn't weigh enough to keep it going all the way around. After months of rooting for him, I finally heard the thing spinning, and snuck in to watch, proud tears in my eyes. He'd been pumping iron or something, I don't know. From then on I had to keep his cage behind the closed bathroom door each night because the annoying wheel sound kept me awake.

Sometimes I took Nick out of his cage and let him run around on the carpet, making little barriers around him out of towels and things. Invariably he would make a break for the space under the futon and I would just catch him before he could disappear forever, my heart pounding like crazy. Late one night he died in my hand. I put him in a little Chinese lacquered jewelry box that someone had given me for Christmas and went out and buried him in the Don Valley in the middle of the night, digging in the dirt with a spoon, crying the whole time. Rest in peace, Nick. Forgive me for electrocuting your family.

While I was away this summer, a new neighbour with a yappy little dog moved in next door. This is to replace the neighbours directly below me and their yappy dog, who have moved out.

The day I got back to town, still shaken by the PchOOOOOooo sound and the lack of West Side Story, I went to bed and was woken at 1am by the new little rat-dog-thing, which barked until 2:30. Then at 7:30 am the bone-shakingly loud construction on Roncesvalles began; they're tearing up the road, for water main work, or streetcar tracks, or maybe just for fun. That week the landlords started destruction on my building's courtyard, and knocking down the walls of the empty apartment below mine. You would not believe how loud it was. Unless maybe you lived in Baghdad circa 2003. No wonder I enjoy killing flies.....The power! The absolute power!

A couple of times a month, I board a train or a plane and go to Montreal, where I take the metro to Papineau station, walk up the street, enter a brick building, climb two sets of stairs and go into a little room behind some glass and pretend to be a bird for a couple of hours. Then I go back home. I'm trying to decide whether my work doing cartoon voices is more or less strange than my usual work as a stage actor. Making funny voices to entertain children versus putting on funny clothes to entertain adults. Mind you, just about any job is pretty weird when you really break it down, except maybe if you're a farmer or a surgeon or a prostitute. Anyone remember this?

Another weird gig I have is doing audio recordings used to train TD Bank employees. Once a month or so, our agency sends along some of the best stage actors you'll ever see (a veritable who's that of Canadian Theatre, as my cousin Adrian would say) to pretend to be TD VISA bill collectors or disgruntled bank customers. The whole thing takes about two hours, sometimes only ten minutes or so of that in studio, the rest in the boardroom eating Timbits. For this we are paid more than we would get for an entire week of performing a play.

One day it occurred to me that my help in training debt collectors to be more humane might directly impact me and my friends. And that much of the money I would be paid by TD would go right back to TD. Just as the money I get from the government in the form of residuals for my Tourism Ontario commercial I send back to the government as tax payments. And last time I got a big residual cheque for my IKEA ad? I went right out and bought myself an EKTORP.

Is that bank training gig more or less weird than the hours I spend providing the voices of miscellaneous cheerleaders, teachers and passersby on Degrassi: The Next Generation? More or less weird than my friends who fake various aches, pains and diseases as "standardized patients" for health care training? Or my old theatre school friend who bought his house and feeds his child with money made dressed as a giant tube of toothpaste? Or is it really weird that I have never been able to describe what my mother does in twenty-five words or less? That my stepmother gave many overworked, worried years of her life to the noble cause of possibly helping Royal Bank post a slightly larger profit every quarter?

AAAARGH! I've got to stop thinking about this! My head is going to blow up. I think I've breathed in too much Raid Flying Insect Killer. Raid Satisfaction With the Status Quo Killer. With Instant Levelheaded Commonsense Knockdown. Hey, that's catchy copy; we might just have something here.

I'm off now, to bake a batch of cookies and change in-the-pants icepacks (because I can), and then pack for a couple of days in Niagara-On-The-Lake. There, I will attend a tribute to the late and great Neil Munro, a director who was an excellent guy and probably the biggest risk taker I'll ever know, and whom I feel lucky to have worked with. Weird job or no.

But before I go, what have we learned today, boys and girls? Why, that your hero, the Skeptical Tourist, is a loser just like you. (Though as far as losers go, she's pretty cool.) That your job is weird and pointless. And that, next time, you will throw a parade.

Yours, not even stoned, not really,

The Tourist

the norton resolutions

From TORONTO
December 31st, 2008

You know, My Ruggedly Handsome and/or Voluptuously Stunning Reader, if you've been following along as you should (and if not, I don't even know why we're having this conversation - I spit in your lazy face! That's right.....but in a hot, sexy way. You know you love it, you filthy little slavehog, you.) Where was I?

Ahem. If you've been following along.....you will know my feelings on annual New Year's resolutions . Ridiculous, I always thought, and doomed to failure. Why bother? Why vow every year that we will become hipper, faster, stronger - when we would be better to just accept that we are pathetic, fat, uneducated losers and get on with it already.

More recently I thought, Hey (ding!), let me not be quite so defeatist about this whole thing. Why not set really, really easy goals for myself .....and then feel an incredibly huge sense of accomplishment for, say, ceasing to pee all over the toilet seat or for giving up eating cold lard in the New Year?

Hence, the last three years my New Year's resolutions have been as follows:

2006: Don't complain about the weather
2007: Take the stairs
2008: Stop swallowing gum

For the most part I've been successful in achieving these by-my-standards impressively challenging goals, though the gum-swallowing is still one day at a time. I'm not a former gum-swallower; I'm a recovering one, and will forever be.

But Lo! Behold! Hold the proverbial phone! Stop the virtual press! A heretofore unexperienced sensation has siezed me this year; a desire to set actual, real, difficult challenges for myself and then -gasp! - go about achieving them. What the fuck is going on?! Is it the lack of challenge in my everyday life? The need, at age thirty-three, to feel a true sense of accomplishment without actually, you know, having babies or getting a real job? Why so suddenly sick of easy and longing for HARD (oh yeah, baby)? Who cares why. There it is.

So, Without further ado, The Skeptical Tourist's Resolutions, 2009 Edition, are as follows:

I RESOLVE...
To Eat Some Human Flesh.
"What?!" you may be saying to yourself, "The Skeptical Tourist has never eaten human flesh? You must be joking!" But it's true, Astonished Reader. I've always meant to, of course, but have been held back by my irrational aversion to actually killing anyone. I mean, it would be a little silly to murder a whole person just to try a bite or, at most, a sandwich; what if I don't even like it? Maybe I could have some hardcore cannibals standing by ready to efficiently use up the rest? (Could be a way to meet some interesting new people.)

I'm sure, though, that I could find several individuals on the worldwide interweb who would be willing, disturbingly happy even, to volunteer to let me bite off a hunk of bicep or something.

Better yet....I'll carve a cut of my own tasty thigh, thereby also saving hours of useless toil at the gym. They do say the flavour's in the fat, am I right?

I RESOLVE.....
To Wear More Makeup and Sluttier Clothing.
Let's face it, time's a tickin'. I can't get away with dressing like a whore forever. So why not go big in '09?

To Keep in Better Touch with Mariah Carey and the Dalai Lama.
They keep having to do Mariah-Lisa-Dalai night without me. Sorry, guys!

To Make Some Negro Friends.
I have got Jamie Robinson. But he only counts as half. Plus it's hard to keep in touch with him because he's always busy eating watermelon and running fast. Then there's Marcia Johnson.... but she just wants me for my body. And you know how I feel about that these last two days.

Other from that, since I work in Canadian theatre, I haven't actually seen a real-life black person since leaving Scarborough in 1994. Therefore, Concernedly Weeping Reader, if you actually know/have seen/are a real black person, please feel free to help me with this.

Lucky coloured candidates can contact me at:

Lisa Can I Be Your Negro Friend
P.O. Box 779, Station A
Toronto, ON M6R 3A6
or at wantsitblack88@lavalife.com. (See profile in the "Casual Encounters" section.) What? Just covering all my bases.

Oh, and applicants should remember to include a photo and 500 word essay on how they would culturally enrich my life.

I RESOLVE....
To Finally Live Out My Life-Long Goal of Blowing Up Revenue Canada.
Hey, and if I do it during office hours....maybe that's where all the roasted human flesh could come from! Guilt free!

Bonus: This is bound to help me realize that other life-long dream to get a day named after me. This would for sure put me over that Guy Fawkes dude, am I right? And Sarah Polley could play me in the movie.

To Learn How to Wilfully Breathe Out of Just One Nostril at a Time.
Come on, you try it! Not so easy is it, huh, Smugface?

To Start Documenting My Dreams Once and for all.
And then use them as the basis for a multi-million dollar hit film about a hobo and a skunk and my grandma who go on an adventure in a forest which is sort of a forest but sometimes sort of like my Junior High and sort of sometimes like my living room and then these guys are there whose heads are made of rubber bands and all my hair falls out and oh yeah Sylvester Stallone and Elizabeth May are there dancing the tango* but then suddenly I'm underwater and it's so cool cuz I can breathe and all the sharks are made of gorgonzola and I wake up screaming.

Three words for you. Box. Office. Gold.
(And Sarah Polley as Stallone.)

I RESOLVE....
To Start My Own Fashion Line and Call it Leese's Pieces.

To Master Not Only Peeing Standing Up, but Pooing, too.
Wish me luck. Accompanying video and inevitable worldwide YouTube sensation to follow.

To Quit Trying to Learn New Languages and Just Make Up My Own Already.
My language would rock, admit it. Will someone donate a tropical island for me to speak it on?

To Wear a Different Pair of Underwear Every Day.
Novel, I know. But worth a try. Fans keep mailing me sexy panties; the least I can do is try to get through them.

To Jump Out of an Airplane.
Or a moving bus.
Or maybe my bed.

To Finally Give in to Beyonce's Management and Let Her Have That Threesome with My Boyfriend and Me.
NO, Jay-Z, you're not invited. Go play with your money. I'll have her back by Tuesday. She's gonna be my special black friend.

To Give Up My Only Intermittently Successful Campaign to Stop Biting My Nails, Instead Seeing if I Can Go Right Through Them and Eat My Entire Hand off.
Hey - that would solve the human flesh conundrum, too! FUCK I'm smart!

To Make Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, Lick the Bottom of My Shoe.
You do know he's into that in private, right?

To Cause, Through Meditation, Hypnotism and Special Apparatus, My Left Foot to Grow Three Sizes Larger, While Making my Right Foot Shrink to a Five and a Half.

To Stop Being so Cold and Suspicious and Get to Know all My Neighbours. Biblically.

To Stop Cashing My RSP's Every Year to Get Through Christmas
....and instead cash them each year on some random day in July and blow the lot on popsicles and safety pins.

I RESOLVE.....
To Stop Using My Eyes for One Month to Test Whether I Develop Super-Sonic Hearing Powers.
(Or just ultra-enhanced good looks which will benefit mankind but madden me as I am forsworn not to look into the mirror to find out what all the fuss is about.)

To Stop Being Such a Wallflower and Let People Know What I Really Think.
Starting now, with you, Attentive Reader. I think you're a Dirty Whore. And God I love you for it.

All right, Sweet Things. Time to say farewell and go start off '09 in great style, doing what I do each year on New Year's Eve: Getting very drunk and forcing people to listen to Michael Jackson's Man In The Mirror at midnight. You heard me. Make that change.

(And perhaps I'll eat some flesh by morning.)

Resolutely Yours,

The Tourist

* Little known fact: Elizabeth May, leader of the Green Party (and welcome addition to any dream except maybe the sexy kind), is in reality, a fine Tango dancer and good friend of Sylvester Stallone.

Dear friends who have an afternoon to kill,

Excitingly, I got my first bit of groupie fan mail the other day, in the form of a comment on my Christmas Blague post asking me if I'm a homo. (See archives at right.) Well, ANONYMOUS, you may not think what you posed was a trick question, but for such a complex and endlessly fascinating person as myself....well there really are so many variables at play.... For instance, who the hell are you???!!!! If you're, say, Christina Aguilera, why then, the answer is, "Yes, of course I'm a lesbian! Nothing but vagina on my menu." If, on the other hand, you are....Condoleeza Rice, then "NO! Eff Off! And stop calling me, Bitch!" So, no, I don't go around squeezing random boobies. I am, however, in touch with my inner lesbian. Now and then I take her out for tea. And by tea, I mean....random boobies.

SURE!

UHHH.....NOT SO MUCH.

In other thrilling Tourist News, Confused-yet-oddly-turned-on-by-Condi-in-the-bath Reader, I have found Lisa Norton 14.6! Or rather she has found me! Some of you will remember that back in an earlier post ("She is Risen", April 2007 http://skepticaltourist.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html) I wrote of my adventures reading about the other Lisa Nortons of the world, in particular one funny talented young blaguist who shared my name but seemed to have dropped off the face of the worldwide web. Well, both lo and behold, through the magic of F*@#Book (and people who have nothing better to do), the now 19 year-old Lisa has been informed of my existence and gotten in touch. Read her comments on She Is Risen and Touristmas Time (December). I actually teared up a little....and maybe not just because I was on my period and crying at the drop of a tampon. I also credit Lisa Norton the younger with exposing me to a new exciting demographic of hot young lesbiotic groupies. I'm sure that explains it...not that such glorious mysteries need be explained.

AND NOW....the LONG AWAITED....EAGERLY ANTICIPATED (by me)....first EVER
RANDOM CRAP ISSUE of the one and only BEST BLOG IN THE WORLD EVER.....the SKEPTICAL TOURIST!!!!

That's right.....a sampling of the weird shit that rattles around in my head each and every day but usually doesn't fit in anywhere. (Like me.) Time to clear out the recycling bin that is my big bad brain and make room for new, fresh 2008 garbage. Come on everybody, here we GO-O-O-O-O-oh!

This is how you say "Up yours" in Hindi: उप यौर्स. Standard feature on Blogspot. Totally frickin' अवेसोमे!!!

I think when you board one of those streetcars that's painted pink and covered with ads for Dirty Dancing (The Classic Story Now on Stage), you know, the ones that make all the macho TTC drivers feel like nancies, you should be greeted by dancing, singing members of the original cast. Bumping and grinding and slithering around the streetcar poles.

If you're not in the mood you can wait for the Amarula Cream car, on which they serve you shots and speak Swahili. Cheetahs prowl up and down and eat you if you don't pay the proper fare or talk too loudly on your cell phone. Incidentally....where do those dickheads get off calling Amarula Cream "The Spirit of Africa" anyway? Yeah, a fruity cream liqueur: that seems to embody the essence of a CONTINENT. Okay, now I'm pissed off. Mostly because no one is giving me free booze on the streetcar.

The Safeway in Regina has a sign at the deli counter proclaiming, "We will shave anything." Do you think they would have shaved my legs? I always wanted to plunk one hairy gam up on the counter, just to see.

If you look up "arts" in the yellow pages, you will find it between "artificial eyes" and "asbestos". I don't know what that means but I thought you should know.

When I was small I was a little obsessed with the yellow pages. It was, after all, the Internet of the eighties. I thought it especially bizarre and somewhat thrilling that anyone could just look up prostitutes and call them. Clowns....Dentists.....Escorts.....all in the same book! A book I was allowed to look at! In broad daylight! Ahh....the wonders of childhood.

Today, passing by College and Grace, I noticed a new restaurant called - wait for it - "I Feel Like Crepe". Oh, College West, how much lower can you sink? A little further west is the future site of the Little Italy Cube Lofts, starting at 400 grand for a loft sized 5x5. Inches, not feet. So you can conveniently hold your apartment in the palm of your hand.

Brilliant idea #468,972: The adults only Easter egg hunt. Have an Easter party with your friends (or maybe just the ones you hope to see naked) and stage a hunt, hiding drugs, porn and mini bottles of booze. Oh yeah, and chocolate (chicks dig it). Let the search (and the please-don't-tell-anyone-at-the-office-on-Monday party) begin! If anyone actually uncovers secret perverted things that you've stashed around your place and forgotten were there, you can play it cool and pretend they were part of the hunt. "You found it! Good for you! Yeah, I know, DISGUSTING, eh?!"

Speaking of disgusting (and I often am).....have you noticed that the tone of your dirty email spam is getting weirder and weirder? No, I am not responsible. But seriously - what's with all the kinky farm sluts? The horny grannies? I suppose at some point the spammers realized that folks could get ordinary porn anytime anywhere...so now they're really working hard to attract your attention. "Hey, I never thought I wanted to see circus performers get it on with one-legged goats...but now that you mention it....and hey, the link is right there in front of me....."

And here is the opposition leader drinking a milkshake.

Do you suppose anyone ever broke up with Beyonce on account of her body being too Bootylicious for him? "Sorry......It's not you.....I just don't think I'm ready for this jelly." I ask this because it's a problem I face time and time again.

Most anticipated film of the year:

Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay. Wait! Maybe you didn't hear me. I said: Harold and Kumar ESCAPE from GUANTANAMO BAY!!! To further illustrate my point:

Very exciting! Or maybe that's just me....after all, I'm one of those people who would rather kiss Harold and Kumar than Brad Pitt.

Also looking forward to the new 3DU2 concert film...though I can't help wishing they'd brought back Smell-O-Vision for that one. What does Bono's sweat smell like? I'm fairly jumping up and down over Be Kind Rewind, an upcoming Michel Gondry flick starring Jack Black and my boyfriend Mos Def. From the Internet movie database: A man (Black) whose brain becomes magnetized unintentionally destroys every tape in his friend's video store. In order to satisfy the store's most loyal renter, an aging woman with signs of dementia, the two men set out to remake the lost films, which include Back to the Future, The Lion King, and Robocop. Not to mention Ghostbusters. Below is the super awesome trailer.......

Helpful Hint # 18.5: If one leaves a muffin, uncovered, in the same fridge as some smoked fish that is just past its due date, one may create.......a carrot-apple-smoked-trout muffin. This is not a good thing.

The odd image you see above is the "Live with Theatre" version of the city of Toronto's Live With Culture campaign. Clearly I've been going to the wrong plays. I want the ones with the men wrestling in their underwear. In fact, I want to be in those plays. I'll play the underwear.

Life brand has a product called "invisible ladies' antiperspirant". Is that what all the invisible ladies use? I guess if you were running around being invisible, but then started sweating a lot, it could blow your cover. And that would suck.

This afternoon as I sat here by the window tapping away at my computer, I looked out onto one of the facing yards and saw these little kids jumping out of their attic window onto their roof. Repeatedly. In their bare feet. They seemed to be playing some game where one kid would throw something out onto the roof and another kid would climb out the window, get the thing, and then scramble back up. Did I mention it was minus 17 with the windchill?

When I saw the littlest one (maybe four or five years old) struggling to get back in, hanging off the window frame like Indiana Jones, I thought okay, I've gotta do something here. So I waited until she was safely inside, and then opened my window and yelled at the next child (a little boy who wasn't even wearing socks), something like "You guys are gonna freeze out there!" I don't think I actually shook my fist and shouted, "You darn kids!" - but boy, did I ever feel old all of a sudden. Especially when the boy darted inside in a panic, slammed the window, and he and his sisters commenced to peer at me above the window sill. There goes Old Lady Norton, yelling at the children again. Hey, at least I didn't just go over and tell on them. Maybe I can hold it over their heads and get them to clean my apartment for me in exchange for my keeping their secret. I could use some little hands to help carry my groceries. Braid my hair. Teach me double dutch skipping again. Show me the way to the second star on the right and straight on 'til morning. Are you there God? I don't want to be 32. I wanna live again, Clarence, I wanna live again.

Brilliant idea #3,592,016: The Forty Year Old Sturgeon, an animated feature about underwater creatures and featuring a character named Areefa Plankton, whose big musical number is an R&B tune called Chain of Food. No need for thanks, Disney. Say it with cash.

When I was a kid, I thought that President's Choice Products were all of Ronald Reagan's favourite foods.

Great lyrics that make no sense #372:

From Michael Jackson's Beat It: "They'll kick you and they'll beat you and they'll tell you it's fair"..... I'm sorry - but who are these people?! And do they tell you it's fair as they're kicking you? Or do they just yell it as they're running away?

Most fantastic covertly homoerotic Hip hop lyric#1:

LL Cool J on Mama Said Knock You Out: "I'm gonna tie you up and let you understand/ that I'm not your average man/ when I got a jammy in my hand DAAAAAMN!!!!! Oooooohh!!".......and later: "And when I pull out my jammy get ready 'cause it might go Blaaaaw, how ya like me now?" and "Don't u nevah, evah, pull my lever/ Cuz I explode!/ And my nine is easy to load!/ I gotta thank God/ Cuz he gave me the strength to rock HARD!!" I don't know, LL, your body might be too bootylicious for us, babe.

By the way, boycott WestJet. WestJet bitches stole my hat.

Well, loyal and exhausted yet newly enlightened, Reader......You know, and I know, and Xtina and Mos know, that I could go all night. But some of those pearls of wisdom/pockets of nonsense will have to await another day. Remind me to tell you about the penis in the pint glass. When you're ready: first learn stand, then learn fly, Daniel-san.

Wax on, wax off,

The Tourist

P.S. Please to comment by clicking "comment" at the end of this post. It's sweet that you're all shy (or technologically challenged) and send me private emails instead, and I appreciate it, but you're also so damned funny.....I want the world to know. Come on, Snuffleupagus - I just want my other friends to see you, too.

A CONFESSION
So I often leave little notes for myself of things I might want to mention to you, dear reader and a half. And all week I've been staring at an envelope next to my computer on which is scrawled, among other things, the words "Speaking of Michael Jackson....". I have NO FUCKING IDEA what this means. Why was I speaking of Michael Jackson? What the hell? I had been sure, I remember, when I wrote it down, that this was going to be the greatest transition ever written in the English language. That it would cement my worldwide reputation as Queen of the Segue. But no. This almost stalled me, sympathetic reader. The very existence of the Tourist was briefly in jeopardy. But you'll surely have noticed that more than a month has passed since last I wrote....and I couldn't leave you hanging, dear ones. At least not without writing:

MY LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT
That's right. MY LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT. This should be easy, as I have no assets, no dependents (OH GAWWWWD I have nothing!!! NOTHING!!!!), not much to leave to anyone should I suddenly kick off. Pile of unpaid bills, anyone? Unfinished vendettas to carry on in my name? Hey, wait a minute.....now there's an idea.....

Anyway, basically I just want it to be officially, indisputably known what to do with my incredibly lovely remains. I had always thought that I would have my will stipulate that after my cremation, my ashes would by mixed into a giant milkshake of which all my friends would be required to partake. Then I thought maybe I'd have my ribs cooked in a big ol' fashioned southern barbecue (remember Ribfest in St. Catharines, anybody?) complete with sauce contests and blues bands and fresh lemonade. What I really wanted to know is whether people would actually do all this stuff. I mean, if it's in my will, they have to, don't they? Carry out my dying wishes and all that? But everybody would know I was just fucking around. Plus what about the vegetarians? And drinking me in a milkshake would give both Dylan Trowbridge and my stepmom a stomach ache, should they outlive me.

But there's this thing. It is the coolest thing. It's called "promession". From the net:

"Promession is a creative and unique approach being developed by Sweden's Susanne Wiigh-Masak, who recently received Gold in this year's prestigious Green Apple awards for Environmental Best Practice. The Award was in recognition of her work in finding an ecological alternative to burial and cremation."

Says the Promessa Foundation:
"An important part of the solution is to remove that which is least important; the water that makes up 70 percent of a normal-sized body. Technically speaking, this is done using an entirely closed individual process in which the corpse is freeze-dried in liquid nitrogen. This makes the body very brittle, and vibration of specific amplitude transforms it into an organic powder that is then introduced into a vacuum chamber where the water is evaporated away.
The now dry powder then passes through a metal separator where any surgical spare parts and mercury are removed. The powder can be disinfected if required. The remains are now ready to be laid in a biodegradable (mulch able) coffin. (ie cardboard - ed.) There is no hurry with the burial itself. The organic powder, which is hygienic and odourless, does not decompose when kept dry. The burial takes place in a shallow grave in living soil that turns the coffin and its contents into compost in about 6-12 months time. In conjunction with the burial and in accordance with the wishes of the deceased or next of kin, a bush or tree can be planted above the coffin. The compost formed can then be taken up by the plant, which can instill greater insight into and respect for the ecological cycle, of which every living thing is a part. The plant stands as a symbol of the person, and we understand where the body went. "

Okay that last part is a bit sucky, but pretty awesome, huh? Of course, failing all that....a nondairy fruit smoothie? Norton fingers? Plant my hair in your garden?

Don't worry, I'm not ill or more suicidal than usual or anything. Talking about death is perfectly natural. I've been doing it for years, well before I was:

HIT BY A CAR
A couple of weeks ago, on a slow news day for the Tourist, I thought, Now how can I make my life more interesting? I know! I'll get run down in the street!

No, seriously, not planned - and don't you go saying otherwise and mess up my lawsuit.

I'm riding my bike along King Street, minding my own business, waaaay over near the curb, humming my happy song, when suddenly! Out of nowhere! Justine S*****k decides to come over and hit me. Why, you may bloody well ask, would Justine S******k want to run me over? What had I done to offend her? Maybe I beat her in a speech arts contest when we were nine? Dissed her haircut? Blew her grampaw? Or had I in fact done NOTHING? Was my life's first encounter with Justine S******k when she, without motive, ran me down on King Street? Do I only know her name is Justine S******k because she pulled over to see whether she had killed anyone or not? Is her name, in fact, not Justine S******k at all, but something I wrote down on a piece of paper along with her number and that of a witness and lost in a drawer or threw in the recycling? Hmmmm?

Anyway, it was nothing major; her VW Rabbit clipped me and I bumped along the side of it for a while, trying to stay upright, and wiped out in the middle of the road when she cleared me. And nobody behind came along and ran me over, which was the big scary possibility. What did come along were two or three other cyclists yelling and screaming and bawling her out on my behalf, while I stood there thinking "Now am I gonna be late for my audition?" So I'm fine. My knee ripped open pretty bad. Mama Lolita said I should have claimed that my torn bloody jeans were really expensive and gotten her to reimburse me......but in my honest little heart I knew that they were from Le Crapeau. And that the crotch had ripped the week before. (Favourite word alert. Wherever you are, whatever you're supposed to be doing right now, say the word "crotch" out loud. No, go ahead. I'll wait. Hilarious, no?)

Of course, if I hadn't been so shaken I surely would have landed that voice job I then rushed off to audition for. No doubt. But you just can't sell Lemon Drop donuts while you're bleeding all over the place - everyone knows that. So curse you, Justine Schmengelpoopy! You and the rabbit you rode in on!

A doctor at a walk-in clinic later that day, looking at my knee for about one second and then at me like I was a hypochondriacal nutcase, said, "Be careful. It's a war out there." Well THAT explains it!

Anyway, it was about time I got hit in at least some minor way. It's the unofficial Toronto cyclist's initiation. I was starting to feel a bit soft, frankly, having been out there on and off for twelve years without an accident. Pete Treadwell gets hit about every other day, it seems. But I'm beginning to think that might be personal. Someone who doesn't like him working with the NDP. Or who once saw him in a crappy play. Then there's the possibility that Pete's just not very good at riding a bike.

LATER THAT DAY
I celebrated my survival by riding into High Park and sitting on one of my favourite benches by Grenadier Pond for a picnic and a read. I have two favourite benches, both with dedication plaques: one for Henrietta Smit, whose name I adore, and one for Theodore and Irene Borkowski, "who loved this park so." Sometimes I wonder whether Henrietta and Theodore and Irene would approve of a reprobate like me lying around on their benches for hours on end, eating raisins (Not raisins! Shameless slut!) and slathering my scantily-clad body with sunscreen. But I don't think they would mind. After all, I, like they, love the park so.

In no time, on this particular outing, I was completely surrounded by geese, who in turn completely surrounded me with poo. Which is the goose way of expressing love. I betrayed theirs by secretly noticing how plump and juicy they looked and speculating on their flavour.

Nearby was this idyllic scene: a blue Vespa parked next to two trees between which hung a hammock with someone sleeping in the breeze. Now that's the life. Someone who has the lazy thing even more figured out than I do. Though I do spend maybe half my life at Sunnyside beach with a thermos of vodka now that summer's here again. Beat that, hammock-man!

My other celebratory gesture was breakfast at Easy (Queen and Roncey, one of my old favourites). With lots of bacon. Because I'm a survivor dammit.

NO SHOW
So I am perfectly free to lie around on benches, clipping my toenails and scratching myself, because Better Living and Escape From Happiness have closed. We had a great long run, at least of Better Living. Escape was a limited run, courtesy of the Luminato Festival (this big multi-gajillion dollar cultural festival that sprung from nowhere fully formed like Athena from Zeus' head. ("Good one, Leese." Thanks.) Brandon McGibbon, who was in the shows (I got paid to make out with him) would sigh "Ah, Luminato....when everything will change and women in gowns and tiaras will be in the front row throwing diamonds at me".

In reality, Luminato was the same old same old as far as we at Factory were concerned (though we were given exciting lanyards to wear that said "company member", and got us into, let me see, oh yes - sweet fuck all.) Our houses, sadly, might have actually been a bit smaller than usual because of all the competition for arts patrons in the city. I mean why come to us when you've got the Shpeeeeeegeltent? ("Naughty showgirls! Bawdy Beefcakes! Daring Divas!" Don't ask.) And the ugly museum to run around in. (Okay, I did run around in the ugly museum; it's not too bad from the inside - crooked and weird and trippy -and it's a PARADISE for school kids to hide from their teachers. There are these deep window wells that can hide dozens of small bodies, in every room, on every floor. Hilarious. )

Anyway, both shows are done now, and part of me is overjoyed to be a bum again. (I excel at it, see above.) I rented - and consumed - season one of HBO's Rome, which is so smart yet sooo dirty. I felt a bit like I was watching Dynasty dressed up as something historical and artistic and kept looking around to see if anyone was going to catch me. I finished painting my kitchen. Started my rowing classes. Volleyball begins this Sunday. And even before closing I was celebrating my impending freedom with a couple of nights of debauched silliness. Sarah Allen and I actually got caught drinking in a private karaoke room and had our booze confiscated. She played it so cool I really thought for a moment that she was gonna slip the guy a rolled up twenty. I won't go into the sordid details of the rest of that evening except to say that we were eating bacon and eggs with Jameson's on my patio at seven a.m. Now there's a meal for survivors.

Celebration aside, my very first day off I was hit hard with a case of PSD. That's Post-Show Depression for you non-theatre types....or those of you not familiar with the acronym that I just made up. PSD is commonly known and experienced by theatre artists after closing a show; it's a combination, I suppose, of loneliness over not seeing the people you've grown close to over several months of intense work, a loss of sense of purpose when you suddenly find yourself with nowhere to go at a set time every day, and then, in some cases, the worry over when the next damn job is and how you're gonna pay your damn bills until you go away to Saskatchewan in September. (Prostitution? AGAIN? Bo-ring!) It's similar to what people in all walks of life facing unemployment experience, I suppose, but we're special, okay?!!! Jeez. Plus we tend to go through it more regularly than the average Joe....and so it gets a special name. Which is not to be confused with PYT (Pretty Young Thing). Speaking of Michael Jackson......

WELL NOT REALLY (apropos of nothing)
Remember the Madonna tune La Isla Bonita? A truly terrible song, but I know at least a few of you know all the words. Listening to it even now it sounds like she sings "Last night I dreamt of some bagels". And later, "I fell in love with some bagels." Apparently it's San Pedro. I also thought that in Where the Streets have No Name, Bono was saying "I see the toaster disappear without a trace." (Dust cloud.) Why did everything I misheard as a kid have to do with bread? Maybe if my parents had fed me.....

FEED ME
...your comments. Yes, do keep it up. Much appreciated. Though if I went by posted comments alone only ten of you read last time. Luckily, I have other ways of knowing you're out there. (Your private emails...my secret cameras....)

Suggestions, perhaps, on what the hell "speaking of Michael Jackson" could have been leading to? On interesting things to do with one's remains? On WHAT TO DO WITH MY LIFE????!!! OH GAAAAWWWWWD!

HELLO?

HEY! Is anybody out there? It is important that The Tourist know this.
I recognize that many of you may be enjoying this blog as a very private, anonymous experience. There could be legions of you out there sitting quietly at your computers giggling with no pants on. (That, incidentally, is a choice those of you who read this at the office might want to rethink.) But it is good to occasionally hear back. There is a comments link at the end of every post. Use it. If you're afraid you won't match my level of brilliance.....well, that's something everyone must face at some point. And isn't it time you embraced your mediocrity?

Sometimes I run into people who tell me they've been reading, which is nice. And once every few days I get hit by a beer bottle hurtling out of a speeding car from which someone is screaming "Pet Sounds rules, you bitch!" There are also those regular death threats, telling me to back off the TTC. But I'm telling you guys: less hitmen, more streetcars. At least on King.

FWALKER MADNESS!!!

So I ain't writ shit in a while, as you may have noticed, pretty reader. I've been going fairly mad doing those two George F. Walker plays in rep at Factory Theatre. We got Better Living up and are about to open Escape From Happiness, and have been using every possible moment to perfect our screaming and running around. I, for one, have been an expert at screaming and running around for years, so I don't know what they're calling me in to all these rehearsals for. Anyway, to give you an example, this week I had eight shows, four rehearsals and a big audition. Also a cold. And insomnia. That, along with getting hit in the head with a bottle every couple of days, can be pretty tiring.

My own fault, though. In very tiny print at the bottom of our contracts is the bit about the Factory owning our souls for all eternity. They also want my firstborn. And my mane of raven-coloured hair. (They fear I may let it down out the window and be rescued by some charming prince who happens to be hanging out in the courtyard. Or a smelly guy from the new shelter next door.)

Those of you who have worked at Factory may be saying, "Window? What window? They sealed those shut years ago." But, disbelieving reader, The Walker Gang is bustin' out. Clare Coulter and I went at the ladies' dressing room window with all kinds of oddly shaped and scary-looking tools (including several knives that they keep handy for actors who want to kill themselves), and then Ken Gass, Artistic Director/Handyman Extraordinaire got through the last bit with a hammer, a screwdriver and a pinch of brute force. Incidentally, on top of our two shows, Ken is directing a production of FWalker's Tough with twenty college students, is moving into a new house and has just finished teaching at U of T for the year. Also his alter ego protects the city from crime at night. Thank you, GassMan!

I busted through another window a week later with a steak knife. The Portuguese Catholic Church was having a noisy parade across the street, which they have proceeded to do just about every day since. I don't know what they're celebrating all the time; maybe it's just really, really fun being Portuguese. Anyway, it gave me the distinct feeling of being in an old prison break movie: I'll dig my way out under cover of all the noise from the marching band...the guards will be distracted.....I'll slip into the crowd and disappear in the busy streets of Paris. I felt like Steve McQueen! Tim Robbins! That guy from Ernest Goes To Jail!

It also got me thinking about my Prison Persona. I think it's important to know where you would fit in in the penal system. Are you a Buttboy, or a Kingpin? Maybe you're the little weasely guy who gets everyone their cigarettes. Or the Wise Black/Old/Crippled dude. The goon who drops the barbells on people's chests during "recreation time". I know who I would be. I'd be the nut digging my way out with a spoon. Every time I made some headway the guards would move me to a different cell. I'd be the laughing stock of all the inmates...until one day, I'd finally do it! I'd be free! And then I'd yell "Yippee!" upon surfacing from my hole and get shot just outside the prison fence. Sad, really.

My castmates are a little worried that they're going to show up in this blague, unflatteringly portrayed and with their identities only slightly disguised. But don't worry, Badbreath, Uglypants, Whoreface and Farty. I would never say anything bad about you guys. (Did I mention I'm doing a show with a bunch of villains from Dick Tracy?)

One really neat thing is getting to work with all these lovely ladies. Clare, Irene Poole, Sarah Manninen, Christine Brubaker. We are breaking the one-chick-per-show rule big time. And they are awesome chicks. One of them may just be the prettiest girl ever to have been rushed off in an ambulance after having stuck a candy up her nose. Not recently. But she wasn't three years old, either.

I can't tell you how often I'm the only woman, or one of two, in a play. I hardly ever get to work with other women, particularly ones my own age. It's a wonder more actresses don't live up to our false "catty" reputation, considering we hardly ever get to work together, instead fighting for those two parts every season..... Anyway, bravo, Fwalker, for writing lots of cool chick roles. I know what the six people reading this are going to tell me. And NO, I don' t want to write a goddamn play. I'll stick to what I'm good at, dammit, and we all know what that is: complaining! I have a real future as a malcontent, so don't go trying to mess that up for me.

Oh yeah. Plug. Come see these:

GIMME SOME SUGAH

Have you noticed? The Tourist ain't been a tourist in too damn long. I gotta blow this town. (And not in the dirty way you're thinking. Pantless perverts.)

The thing is the cash. The cash is the thing. I've gotta figure out a way to stabilize my money situation somehow. I go to such extremes. The other day I'm in my local cheese boutique (The Thin Blue Line on Roncesvalles, which is fantastic, really) buying nine dollar gourmet spreads and other nonsense, standing in line behind one broad all decked out in Lululemon and another who's holding a Shih Tzu with a bow stapled to its head and I suddenly think......My God. I'm one of them. (The women, not a Shih Tzu.) And in another month I'll be having the bread or milk conversation with myself. You know, when you can only afford one or the other?

KILL ME.

For a time in college I was living off of mac and cheese without the milk. I thought this was pretty gross/somehow ingenious until Lindsay Ann Black told me she survived school on instant just-add-water pancakes. Without any syrup. Damn! I can't believe I never thought of that one! I was eating, what? Petroleum? But she was pretty much eating sponges! One of those would fill you up for days! Brilliant!

I'm thinking of opening a chain of restaurants on campuses across the country: The Sponge and Petroleum Diner. Come to The S & P! You'll eat what we give you...and you'll like it. Okay, you won't like it, but it will be relatively filling. And you might just get fingered in the washroom. This is university, after all.

I owe all my money to the frigging government these days. Sometimes I have these dreams at night where Revenue Canada burns down. Or someone hacks into their computer and erases all their records of who owes what. Not that I'm encouraging anyone to do such things. I'm just relating a dream, and who can explain the mysterious subconscious, after all.

I need me a sugardaddy/mama. I'm enlisting your help, well-connected reader. Please encourage all the incredibly good-looking, smart, funny, cool rich people you know to apply. Oh, and they must be single. The last thing I need is another guy like Brad hangin' around, harassing me. Yeah, you heard me, Mr. Pitt! Stop CALLING me! Fatlip needs help with the kids!

WHAT'S A PICHANGA?

One way to ease the fiscal situation might be to brush up my singing skills and start auditioning for musicals. (Because I'd land them all instantly, right?) Anyway, it couldn't hurt to diversify. I've always thought it would be a blast to perform in a big musical. This is the secret wish of every actor. Like a bunch of breeders standing on the sidelines at the Pride Parade, sighing with envy as the floats go by. Of course all the musical performers I know want to do "straight" plays and be taken seriously. Bunch of whiners. You people get to wear sequined pants! At work! How could you give that up!

I don't actually enjoy watching many musicals. Though I am looking forward to Dirty Dancing. I've decided it will be worth the price of admission just to hear a certain friend of mine say the word "pichanga".

Speaking of Dirty Dancing, I watched the movie again last week. It airs on the Chick Channel - which they still insist on calling The W Network - about five times a day. So no matter what a woman's cycle, it will be there to weep over when she's PMSing. Okay, am I the only one who cries at Jerry Orbach EVERY FRICKIN' TIME? I'm sorry, but the dad gets a bad rap in that flick. I mean how is he supposed to know that Johnny Castle didn't knock up Penny? And at the end? When Johnny says "Nobody puts Baby in a corner"? Maybe Baby likes being in the corner! In fact, the previous scene, which we don't see, is the dad saying "Where would you like to sit, Baby?" And she says "In the corner, please." Check the extras on the DVD. It's one of the deleted scenes, though it beats me why. Personally I love scenes where people decide on seating arrangements. Riveting and tense.

Big Nerd Moment over. Phew.

HERE'S AN IDEA

Personally, I wouldn't touch this one with a ten foot pole, but........ Strip Club Makeover. A reality show for the, you know, Tearing People's Homes and Businesses Apart Channel. Like Restaurant Makeover, except with naked chicks. You fix up the decor, improve the menu, have a guest artist work with the strippers on their dancing and - my favourite part - get a really bitchy Big Gay Designer to critique their costumes. So much comedy/ugliness potential it boggles the mind. Though actually watching it might make me want to puke. Just send royalty cheques to P.O. Box Norton You Are Brilliant, SmartTown, Ontario, M6R2K5. And consider this a copywright, you sons of bitches. Oh, and I just got my own inadvertent stripping pun about the ten foot pole. Feel free to appreciate that, too.

So yeah, this is how I'm spending my precious night off before opening week. Staying up 'til three a.m. writing to you bozos. Though I did accomplish other things today, including romping around Roncey with Tracy Dawson, who will be shortly moving to Los Angeles FOREVER (that may be my next trip once your sugardaddy recommendations come through). And I hung out on my newly created back patio, which is really just a glorified fire escape, but as the Actress told the Bishop, every inch counts. I got some exciting IKEA things recently (magic folding table, magic folding stools) and made the spot really nice and cleaned it all up....and what's out there when I walk out the next morning? Why, two big piles of cat turd, of course. And don't try and tell me those bastard cats don't know exactly what they're doing. Actually it could have been raccoon; my back door is a favourite spot for raccoons to make love. Especially now that I've made it all romantic for them. By the way, they like a nice light chardonnay. Squirrels are more into Pinot Noir. And handcuffs. Okay, picture a squirrel in handcuffs and tell me that's not funny. If you're not laughing I'll give you your money back.

SPEAKING OF FUNNY

Ross Manson taught me this thing. You go to Google, and into the search field you type your name, followed by the word "needs". You then check out the first ten coherent (or almost) phrases that pop up. It's uncanny.

Here's me.....
1. Lisa needs braces.
2. You need a flat, fishes need the sea, Lisa needs a tree.
3. Lisa needs a bigger grin and lots more warmth from an overly conscientious Julia Roberts.
4. LISA needs to more clearly communicate to clients how they can benefit from being members of LISA.
5. Lisa needs to handle lower conditions.
6. Lisa needs help with her vertical blinds.
7. LISA NEEDS TO GET A LIFE
8. Lisa needs a nap.
9. Lisa needs a new schtick.
10. Lisa needs to think.

I like number four. I also like that, no matter how politically and artistically active Ross Manson (theator creator/activist/swinger of the Wrecking Ball - www.thewreckingball.ca ) may be, he still wastes his time farting around with Google games. Wait a minute. Maybe I don't like that. I mean ALL I do is shit like that. Without getting anything productive done.

I'm going to bed now. I may go get rubbed by a strange man in the morning (Otani Shiatsu Clinic, 24 Roncesvalles, 416-533-9964, OHMYGOD). I had my first Shiatsu experience a couple of weeks ago, and felt amazing afterwards. Taller, looser, smarter. Don't laugh; I think my vision was actually sharper. And I could leap medium-sized buildings in a single bound. I'm working on the tall ones.

An appropriate portion of my love,

FREEZTER WEEKEND
Ahhh......the traditional minus two degrees Easter Sunday. (Said I wouldn't complain about the weather, said I wouldn't complain about the weather....) Please allow me to just say: MOTHERFUCKER! CHRIST! BLOODY BLOODY BLOODY HELL!
Okay. Resolution back on track.

And now, the traditional Easter/Passover random thoughts from some dumb bitch with nothing better to do:

THE GIRL WHO FORGOT STUFF
In my last post I speculated on whether anyone had ever written a novel based on a play or film instead of the other way around. Take note, gentle reader: the insanely talented Sean Dixon (playwright/actor/astronaut) has, in fact, written a novel based on his play The Girls Who Saw Everything. Sean, in fact, told me ALL ABOUT IT a couple of months ago when I ran into him at the Film Buff. I forgot this (though it obviously wormed into my subconscious mind) because I am, in fact, a moron. Please go to this ("Sean Dixon's Authorial Banjoree" at the Gladstone, April 26th). You could win a ukelele. Or this (Coach House Press' Spring Launch May 2nd at Revival). Please buy his book (in hard cover, for lots and lots of money, if you can, so that he will get something out of it). I personally guarantee it will be weird and good. Or Sean will give you your lots and lots of money back. And massage your feet.

CHAMPAGNE COCAINE CHOW MEIN COBAIN:
THE SHAUGHNESSY BISHOP-STALL STORY
Speaking of weird and wonderful writers, Shaughnessy Bishop-Stall (or Young BS to Tourist regulars) is upset that mentions of him have become less mythic and mysterious. He takes issue with the fact that he went from Adventures With Bridesmaids to merely being The Guy My Ceiling Nearly Fell On. I take issue with his WHINING AND COMPLAINING. Not sure whining fits with the sexy rogue image you're goin' for there, BS. Get a motorcycle or something and maybe we'll talk.

Okay, okay......to appease my dissattisfied friend, I challenge you, sexy and talented reader, to reply to this post with a paragraph, or even a sentence, furthering the Young BS Myth. You needn't know him personally. Key words and phrases (inspired by the actual life of Bishop-Stall) may include but are by no means limited to: Hot Lesbian Doctor, Boozecan, Deadline, Bisexual Vampire Party, Writing Class, Poker Binge, Champagne, Cocaine, Chow Mein, Cobain. I know, what a boring guy! Good luck making anything interesting out of that.

LISA NORTONS UNITE!
Recently I was Googling myself - not in public, don't worry, I've learned my lesson since the arrest - and I discovered that there is a wide variety of incredibly interesting people out there named Lisa Norton. I thought I'd compile a list of Top Ten Lisa Nortons and post it on this Blague. The rankings would be a tough call (to name but a few, there's an award-winning novelist, a renowned sculptor, an Ecologist specializing in sustainable land use, and an eleven-year veteran high-school bus driver in Pittsylvania, Virginia who is also a substitute teacher and often fills in on a moment's notice when she drops off the students). My Outsized Ego, however, allowed me to assume, while reading through doctors, lawyers and saints with my name, that I would easily allow myself to top the list. That I would be the Number One Lisa Norton! Norton Supreme! La Norta Grande!

Then, sweet-smelling reader, I encountered the website of "14.6 year-old" Lisa Norton of Bradford, Ontario, a sassy, irreverent kid with huge feet, a wry sense of humour and a passion for writing and drawing.
http://ca.geocities.com/lisa_da_punk_rocker/index.htm

She's the winner by a mile. Reading on, though, I discovered that young Lisa's site hasn't been updated in years, that she should be 18.6 or thereabouts my now, and that her listed email address is now invalid. Where are you, other LMN?! You are awesome!

I'm so afraid for this girl. She reminds me in some ways of myself at a younger age - and God knows I could have gone bad, instead of achieving the infinite good that I do now. (No need to thank me, homeless lepers.) She's probably hanging out at the mall with some deadbeat boy or girlfriend, too busy worrying about what bands she should like (and why that burning sensation won't go away) to bother drawing and writing poems anymore. Worse yet, perhaps all the stories and comics seem a childish waste of time when she has so much chemistry homework and has to achieve that 95 average if she wants to get into Queens. Maybe she's got a kid or two by now. Maybe she dropped out of school and became a stripper at the local Bradford peeler bar. Spends her nights trying to get the guys she ignored in high school to slip some bills into her g-string. Giving lapdances to her former teachers. The guy she once had a big crush on is now the sleazy emcee/resident dealer. He expects the occasional handjob in his van if you want him to play the right song when you dance.

OR, most frightening of all, perhaps I am destined to never find Lisa Norton 14.6, as she is an alternate version of me in a parrallel universe and never the twain shall meet. If I find her....my head will blow up. Sigh.

BITTER DISAPPOINTMENT
Dreamgirls is such a piece of crap! Oh My God! That is all.

But you're still hot, Beyonce. Don't worry baby, I don't blame you. Anytime you and Jennifer Hudson invite me back to that hot tub, I'm there. Send the good jet. This time the caviar's on me.
